Colorado car insurance: minimums, prices and your estimate

Colorado requires at least $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 of property damage liability (written 25/50/15).

Colorado has used the at-fault system since 2003. Your policy includes $5,000 of medical payments coverage and uninsured motorist coverage unless you turn them down, and state law limits how insurers can use your credit.

Since October 15, 2025, an updated Colorado regulation requires auto insurers to oversee and test their use of outside consumer data, algorithms and predictive models so they do not unfairly discriminate.

Rules worth knowing in Colorado

  • Medical payments coverage of $5,000 is included unless you reject it in writing or the same way you applied. It is not required on motorcycles, low-powered scooters or off-road vehicles.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage, which also covers underinsured drivers, is included unless you reject it in writing, and your insurer must offer limits equal to your liability limits. Your uninsured motorist benefits are not reduced by payments from other coverage.
  • Insurers cannot deny, cancel or nonrenew you, or set renewal rates, based on credit without other independent factors. Medical debt in collections, verified identity theft and credit damage from a divorce cannot count against you.
  • A change in your credit-based insurance score can raise your premium, the Colorado Division of Insurance notes, and you can ask to be re-rated with updated credit at your annual renewal.
  • Credit-based insurance scores cannot use your gender, income, ZIP code, religion, marital status or nationality. Insurers also may not use outside data, algorithms or predictive models that unfairly discriminate by race, religion, sex, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Ask the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles whether you need an SR-22 after a suspension or serious violation and for how long, since the state sets the filing period.

Questions about Colorado car insurance

What is the minimum car insurance in Colorado?

Colorado requires at least $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 of property damage liability (written 25/50/15).

How much is car insurance in Colorado per month?

For a 35-year-old with a clean record, our model puts full coverage at about $259 to $343 a month and state-minimum coverage at about $60 to $79. Age, record, car, ZIP code and the company you choose move the real number a lot.

Is Colorado a no-fault state?

At-fault (tort) state: the driver who causes a crash, and their insurer, pays for the other side's injuries and damage.

Can insurers in Colorado use my credit score?

Yes. Many insurers in Colorado use a credit-based insurance score, so better credit usually means a lower price.

Do I need an SR-22 in Colorado?

Only if a court or the state requires one, usually after a serious violation or a lapse. Ask the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles whether you need an SR-22 after a suspension or serious violation and for how long, since the state sets the filing period.
