Rules worth knowing in Utah
- Minimum PIP also pays the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 weeks, $20 a day for household help for up to 365 days, $1,500 for funeral costs and a $3,000 death benefit. Motorcycles, off-highway vehicles and trailers do not need PIP.
- You can sue for general damages, such as pain and suffering, only in cases involving death, dismemberment, permanent disability or impairment, permanent disfigurement, a broken bone, or medical expenses over $3,000.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage come with your policy unless you waive them. Uninsured limits match your liability limits (up to the insurer's maximum) unless you sign a form to reject or reduce them, and reduced limits cannot go below $30,000 per person and $65,000 per accident.
- Insurers may not use your credit information to set your rate, decide eligibility, or renew or cancel your policy. The only exceptions are initial underwriting, when other risk factors are also considered, and giving you a discount.
- If Utah requires you to file an SR-22, the state sets how long it must stay on file, so check the period with the Utah Driver License Division.
