Idaho car insurance: minimums, prices and your estimate

Idaho requires at least $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 of property damage liability (written 25/50/15).

Idaho is an at-fault state, and its $15,000 property damage minimum is lower than in many states. Idaho also limits how insurers use credit: it cannot be the primary reason you pay more or are turned down.

Rules worth knowing in Idaho

  • Your policy includes uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at 25/50 unless you reject either or both in writing or electronically. A rejection applies to everyone on the policy and carries over to renewals with the same insurer.
  • Credit cannot be the primary basis for a higher premium, cancellation, nonrenewal or denial, which means it cannot count for more than all other factors combined.
  • Idaho does not require personal injury protection or medical payments coverage.
  • Instead of a policy, you can hold a certificate of self-insurance or post a bond with the Idaho Director of Insurance for at least $50,000 per accident per vehicle, up to $120,000 for five or more vehicles.
  • Not carrying the required insurance is a $75 infraction the first time. A second conviction within five years is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
  • Idaho sets its own rules on whether a serious violation calls for an SR-22 or similar filing, and for how long, so check with the Idaho Transportation Department.

Questions about Idaho car insurance

Idaho requires at least $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 of property damage liability (written 25/50/15).

How much is car insurance in Idaho per month?

At-fault (tort) state: the driver who causes a crash, and their insurer, pays for the other side's injuries and damage.

Yes, within limits set by state law, so better credit usually means a lower price when you buy a new policy.

Do I need an SR-22 in Idaho?

Only if a court or the state requires one, usually after a serious violation or a lapse. Idaho sets its own rules on whether a serious violation calls for an SR-22 or similar filing, and for how long, so check with the Idaho Transportation Department.
